NEXT week is Anti-Bullying Week – and Warrington will be following the lead of the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) by focussing on tackling verbal bullying.
Theme for the week is “Stop and think – words can hurt.”
Young people at last year’s ABA youth summit raised concerns about the negative use of language in schools and the wider community.
They believe that, contrary to the old saying about “sticks and stones”, expressions like “you’re so gay” and words like “sket” or “slag” are key indicators of bullying or a hostile environment.
Warrington Borough Council’s children and young people’s team are supporting the campaign by holding an anti-bullying stall at the bus interchange on Monday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, the council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “Bullying can have a devastating impact on children and young people which is why we are fully behind this campaign to tackle it. We know that derogatory language, such as words and expressions that are homophobic, racist, sexist or anti-disabled are far too common in our schools and colleges.
“With this campaign we aim to raise awareness of and help tackle verbal bullying in our communities.”
The ABA has created an online resource pack about the campaign containing information and advice for schools, parents and carers, youth workers and colleges.
The resource pack along with Anti-Bullying Week pencils, poster and stickers are available from the website www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying_week-1.aspx and lots of schools from Warrington will be using the pack.
