WARRINGTON Borough Council has doubled its stock of grit in case the severe weather conditions experienced last winter are repeated.
Officers say that in a typical winter season (November to February) approximately 1,200 tonnes of grit would be used on the town’s roads. Last year almost double that was used in just three weeks.
Now a stockpile 2,000 tonnes of grit is now waiting at the highways depot to be dispatched at the first sign of frost. More is also on order.
Coun Alan Litton, the council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “The council’s highways team is constantly monitoring the weather situation and we feel we are better prepared than ever before.
“The wintry conditions we experienced both locally and nationally last year were unprecedented. We haven’t seen a prolonged period of cold weather like that in a very long time. Hopefully we won’t again this year, but if we do we are ready for the worst and our team of gritters can be out on the roads within an hour.”
