The Yellows bow out of Cheshire Senior Cup

A much-changed Warrington Town side were knocked out of the Cheshire Senior Cup by Hyde United on Tuesday night.

The Yellows scored inside two minutes through Stefan Mols and led twice in the first half, which ended 2-2 thanks to Tom Pratt’s late equaliser.

But Hyde asserted their authority in the second half against the home side, who gave debuts to four youngsters as well as 46-year-old ‘keeper James Speare.

Mols poked home from Matt Grivosti’s cross for a dream start on a bitter January evening.

That was cancelled out when Harry Benn, sent off in the league meeting between these two sides in November, had a free-kick from the edge of the box deflected beyond Speare.

The Yellows restored their lead when Jordan Buckley brought down a long ball by Luke Duffy and then curled a left-footed shot past Craig Ellison.

Ben Hough missed a golden opportunity to double the advantage when he shot straight at Ellison from Mols’ lay-off, and Mols too had a first-time shot well saved.

Hyde equalised two minutes shy of the break, Harry Ditchfield’s low cross taken in by Pratt who fired through bodies and through the hand of Speare in goal.

The game was all but over by the hour though as Hyde scored two quickfire goals.

Steady defender Fagbola stooped low to head in off the underside of the bar and then good work by Pratt in the box saw him pull back for Jonah Mitchell to poach in the goalmouth.

Ellison made two good saves to deny Josh Amis one-on-one and then tipped over from Matt Grivosti, before Mitchell bagged his second from a rebound off Pratt’s shot.

The Yellows are back in action on Saturday in the league away at FC United.
