Volunteers urgently needed for community litter pick at Appleton Thorn

VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed for another community litter pick at Barleycastle Lane, Appleton Thorn, this Saturday, October 2.

Following on from a similar community litter picking event just before lockdown in March last year, the local Litter Network is teaming up with Warrington Borough Council to organise a repeat event.

One of the orgnaisers Tony Dixon said: “This is our chance to make a significant difference to one of the worst litter hotspots around the edge of our town.
“If you can help, please park at the Thorn Inn car park for 0845, so you have enough time to walk along to assemble at the “burger van layby” for 0900.
“At the lay-by the volunteers will assemble for kit distribution and safety briefing at 0900.
“Please bring practical weatherproof clothing with strong footwear and gardening gloves if possible,” added Tony.
All pickers, hi-vis and litter bags will be supplied by Warrington Borough Council, who are also organising a rolling roadblock of Barleycastle Lane with 3-way temporary traffic control, to allow the pick.
As it is a busy road, with some unpleasant waste expected, no children are allowed for health and safety reasons.
As in 2020, the busier B53356 leading to the motorway will be picked by WBC operatives later.
Tony added: “It is still intended to start conversations with the trading estate businesses regarding ongoing litter issues.
“Apologies for such short notice, this was out of our hands.
“Please show your support for a cleaner environment around our town.”
