All-round sportswoman Emily Maddison, a Year 10 pupil from Lymm High School, had
previously represented Cheshire at hockey and netball and holds the national shotput record for under 16 girls in the Air Training Corps.
Emily played handball for Warrington, and as a result of her performances, was invited to play for Cheshire. Next, she was invited for England handball trials at Wolverhampton – where 30 girls competed for 16 places for a tournament in Sweden.
They took part in a series of fitness and stamina tests, and some matches.
The tournament in Sweden involved 19,000 youngsters aged from eight to 18. The England team won one of their games 10-4, against a Danish team and were the first English team to ever have a victory in Sweden.
When the team returned home they played a match against Ireland and won 15-9.
