WARRINGTON residents are being urged to check that their electoral registration details are up to date by responding to canvass communications.
The annual canvass ensures that the council can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered to vote so that they can be encouraged to do so.
People who have moved house recently are particularly encouraged to check their details. Research by the Electoral Commission, published in 2019, indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time. Across Great Britain, 92% of people who have been at their property for more than sixteen years will be registered, compared to 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.
If you have changed address in the past year, please make sure you have updated your details on the electoral register.
Only notifying the council about your council tax does not update your information on the electoral register – you also need to update your details online. You can check and update your details quickly and easily at registersecurely.com/warrington – please ensure you have your unique security codes provided on the form that has been sent to you.
Warrington Borough Council’s Chief Executive, Professor Steven Broomhead MBE, said: “If your details are not up to date on the electoral register, you may not be able to vote in the next elections.
“We encourage all Warrington residents, especially those who have recently moved into Warrington or changed their address, to check and update their details to ensure that they can have their say.
“As we carry out the annual canvass to update the electoral register, we will continue to follow public health guidelines to ensure the safety of all.”
