POLICE have moved to reassure residents that a drone spotted flying over Appleton Thorn Open prison earlier today, was being used for legitimate purposes.
Police posted on social media: “We have had a few reports about a drone flying over HMP Thorn Cross today.
“We would like to reassure anybody who has any concerns that this was in fact organised by the prison to get an overview of the premises and identify any potentially vulnerable points.”
The prison has been surrounded in controversy in recent months following complaints about drugs being smuggled into the prison and a number of incidents involving prisoners absconding from the premises.
