Christmas – and how it affects bin collection days

1

HOUSEHOLDERS in Warrington are being urged to recycle properly over the Christmas and New Year period – and not just throw their rubbish in the black bin.
The borough council is reminding people that  Christmas cards, cardboard packaging and foil can go in the blue recycling bin as well as aluminium cans and glass bottles.
Similarly, Christmas trees can be recycled via St Rocco’s tree collection for a small donation, or taken to community recycling centres, along with wreaths and plants.
Cllr Judith Guthrie, the council’s cabinet member for environment and public protection said: “It’s important to keep in mind that a lot of the additional waste we make around Christmas can be recycled.
“You also may not realise that some types of wrapping paper are recyclable, or that some Christmas tree lights can be taken to one of our community recycling centres. You can always check what can go in your black or blue bins, or what you can take to a community recycling centre by visiting the council’s website.”
Other reminders from the council include:
*Don’t put batteries in bins as they may cause a fire. They can be disposed of at local recycling banks or LiveWire libraries Lots of supermarkets also have battery recycling bins
*Christmas tree lights can be taken to some of community recycling centres that accept small electrical items
*Baubles and tinsel can’t be recycled. Re-use them for as long as possible but if their time has come, put them in the normal household waste.
Community recycling centres will still be open through December:
*Gatewarth community recycling centre is open 8am-6pm throughout the year.
*Woolston community recycling centre is open 10am-4pm weekdays, 8am-6pm weekends.
*Stockton Heath community recycling centre is open 10am-4pm weekdays, 8am-4pm weekends.
But they are closed on Christmas day, Boxing day and New Year’s day.

Most people’s bin collection day will be different:
If the normal collection day would be December 22, 23, 24 or 25, it will be a day earlier. There will be no change for people whose normal collection day is December 29, 30 and 31. Where the normal collection day is January 1 it will take place the following day.
