Age is no barrier to new adventures for residents at Arplemere Care Home

Residents at Arplemere Care Home in Warrington were treated to a unique experience when local owl expert John Hawkins, known as “The Owl Man” from Cheshire, brought a collection of owls for residents to meet up close.

Residents learned about the birds’ habits, habitats, and care while getting the rare opportunity to handle and photograph the owls.
Among those most enchanted was 95-year-old resident Inez Hughes, who described the experience as “absolutely wonderful.” Inez said: “It was the most wonderful opportunity, in fact probably the best experience I have ever had. It was a truly magical day, one that I will never forget. Age is no barrier to new adventures.”
Animal therapy and experiential activities have become increasingly popular in care homes. According to research by Age UK, older adults who engage in new and stimulating experiences show up to a 20% improvement in mood and social wellbeing.
Laura Aspin, the General Manager at Arplemere, added, “These kinds of visits are so valuable for our residents. They inspire conversation and create shared moments that stay with everyone long after the event ends. The smiles and excitement on residents’ faces today said it all.”

You can find out more about activities and events at Arplemere during the home’s weekly Wine-Down Wednesday event, where all are welcome to join residents from 14:00 for a relaxing afternoon of wine and cheese. Other refreshments are available.
