WARRINGTON Wolves sit top of Super League at Easter after thrashing Leigh 42-6.
Returning to winning ways after last week’s first defeat of the season at Leeds, the Wolves made the most of Wigan’s derby defeat to St Helens to go top of the table, having missed out on the chance to do so with the defeat at Headingley.
They were never in any trouble against the disappointing Leopards, taking the lead inside two minutes through Josh Smith, who was found by Ben Currie after he had claimed a cross-field kick by the returning Marc Sneyd, in for Ewan Irwin at half-back.
A Matty Ashton interception try from half way increased the lead and James Bentley and Joe Philbin added further scores to make it 24-0 at the break.
George Williams ran in for a fifth try and Ashton scored his second in the corner off a Josh Thewlis pass.
Leigh got a mere consolation through Josh Cook on 63, but Warrington had the final say through Sam Powell, with Ashton denied a late hat-trick.
Warrington sit top on points difference, with the top four – the others being Leeds, Wigan and St Helens – all on 10 points.
The two teams go head to head again next weekend in the challenge cup, but it is likely to be a different contest, as Leigh rested some of their big guns ahead of the clash, which which will see one side just 80 minutes from Wembley.
