Concern over rising cost of car parking at Walton Gardens

A concerned Councillor has warned that raising parking charges at Walton Gardens could cause new problems for residents in Walton Village.

Local Lib Dem Cllr Sharon Harris says that the increase in parking charges, which came into effect on 1st April, is likely to encourage drivers to park for free in Walton Village, rather than use the car park.

Cllr Harris said: “While the council needs to manage parking and raise money, this change might just move the problem somewhere else. People living in Walton Village already find it hard to park near their homes. More visitors and events at Walton Hall will mean more cars parking in the village and will lead to busier roads and increased traffic.
“I also fear that Walton Estate car parking charges will continue to rise every year.
“Liberal Democrats want to work constructively with the Council and residents to find a solution to the parking problems. We want more frequent buses from Warrington town centre to Walton Estate, including better evening and weekend services.
“We also want to continue to explore a Resident Parking Zone scheme in the Village with the Council, residents and St John’s Church.”
The latest increases has seen car parking charges increase from £3 to £3.50 on weekdays and from £4.50 to £5 on Bank Holidays and weekends.
