A 21-year-old man from Warrington who dragged a police officer along the road on a motorbike while being detained has been arrested.

At around 11.30pm last night, Thursday 26 March, officers in Warrington responded to reports of a disturbance in the Fairfield and Howley area.

Response officers were quickly deployed to the scene, and a 21-year-old man was asked to leave the address.
The man failed to leave despite being asked multiple times by officers.
An officer attempted to engage with the man, who was sitting on his motorbike, and again asked him to leave the area.
The man then started the vehicle and drove off, dragging the officer along with him.
Fortunately, the officer managed to break free from the vehicle and did not sustain any serious injuries. The rider, however, failed to stop following the incident and continued to drive away.
The man handed himself in at Warrington Police Station today, Friday 27 March. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of Section 39 assault, assault of an emergency worker, and dangerous driving. He remains in custody at this time.

Superintendent Sam Billington, Area Commander for Warrington, said:“Every day, response officers willingly step into the unknown to keep people safe. In this incident, an officer was dragged along the road by a rider attempting to flee. That conduct will not be tolerated, assaults on Emergency Workers are utterly unacceptable.
“I’m relieved our colleague avoided serious injury and he is being fully supported. I want to recognise the professionalism and courage shown by all officers who responded.
“A 21-year-old man has now handed himself in has and been arrested on suspicion of Section 39 assault, assault of an emergency worker, and dangerous driving. He remains in custody while our investigation progresses at pace.
“Let me be clear: we will continue to tackle criminality head on and will relentlessly pursue anyone who thinks they can harm our officers or endanger the public. We will use every lawful power available to bring those who behave in this way to justice.”
