WARRINGTON Town came from behind to record back-to-back wins for the first time since November by beating Lancaster City 2-1.
There hadn’t been much in the game in the first half, with the two teams separated by a spectacular overhead kick by Lancaster number nine Nic Evangelinos.
But the Yellows controlled the second half, and Joe Rodwell-Grant fired home an equaliser on 57 minutes, before defender Josh Shaw scored his first goal from the club off a Reece Daly corner.
It meant that, like in last week’s win over Hyde United, the Yellows completed a league double over their opponents.
Paul Carden was forced into a couple of changes, opting to play three centre halves, which meant Rodwell-Grant partnered Max Thompson up front.
Thompson had the first half-chance of the match, heading wide at the near post from a Daly cross, before Rodwell-Grant received the ball with his back to goal, turned and shot just wide.
But the hosts took the lead on 20 minutes, a free kick to the back post was headed up, and Evangelinos, with his back to goal, launched an overhead kick from 12 yards in to the top corner.
That boosted the hosts, and forward Steven Yawson started to cause problems, firing wide from a good position.
Evangelinos spurned a glorious chance to double Lancaster’s lead on the stroke of half-time, heading wide when free in the box from Joe Amison’s cross.
Warrington controlled the second half and fired an early warning shot when Josh Vela had a shot saved one-handed by Brad Kelly.
It was the introduction of Kallan Murphy that helped unlock things. One of his first contributions was to win a header and find Rodwell-Grant, who took a touch and fired low past Kelly from 20 yards.
Murphy and Rodwell-Grant proved a handful as a partnership, and after Murphy’s shot was blocked, Vela fizzed a volley just wide.
Rodwell-Grant’s hold-up play found Shaw on the overlap to force the corner from which Shaw scored, getting a flick on Daly’s in-swinging delivery on 72 minutes for 2-1.
From there, Lancaster simply couldn’t get any changes out of the Warrington back three, and at the other end, Rodwell-Grant had a half chance saved and a penalty appeal waved away.
The Yellows are back in action at home to league leaders Hebburn Town next weekend.
