Blood transfusion gives Labrador “Bear” a new lease of life – and a new friend!

THE team at Burford Lane Vets in Lymm have witnessed a truly heartwarming moment after they carried out life-saving emergency surgery on Labrador “Bear”, which required a blood transfusion.

While blood transfusions are not uncommon at Veterinary Practices, meeting the donor and becoming friends is!

Taking up the story, Alexi Voudouris and Rachel Dean from Burford Lane Veterinary Centre, said: “A beautiful black Labrador called Bear was rushed to us after collapsing at home. He was extremely weak, and tests revealed a ruptured mass on his spleen, causing life-threatening internal bleeding. Without urgent surgery, he would not have survived.
Before we could operate, Bear needed a blood transfusion, and that’s where another local Labrador stepped in.
“Moose, a regular patient at our practice, was quickly brought in by his owner and generously donated blood, giving Bear the chance he needed. Thanks to that donation, our team was able to perform emergency surgery to remove Bear’s ruptured spleen.
“We’re delighted to say Bear made a fantastic recovery.
“To say thank you in person, Bear’s owners later arranged a playdate so he could meet his lifesaver. The two Labradors instantly hit it off, running around together as if nothing had ever happened. Albeit carefully!
“At a time when veterinary stories often focus on pressures and challenges, moments like this are a nice reminder of the compassion, teamwork and community spirit that exists every day in local practices and their communities.”
