Guiseley send Yellows crashing to fourth defeat in five

WARRINGTON Town’s dismal run of form continued with a 4-0 defeat away at Guiseley.

The Yellows were not at the races and the game was done within half an hour, as they conceded three goals, to fall to a fourth defeat in five games.

There was an element of misfortune to the game’s opener on eight minutes, Liam Isherwood tipping Harrison Hopper’s 30 yard free-kick on to the crossbar, the ball looping up and then bouncing down off the crossbar for a second time and in to the path of Lebrun Mbeka to head in from close range.

Mbeka stayed down for a period after that, clattered by a scrambling Isherwood, but he eventually returned to his feet to provide the foundation for a dominant Guiseley display at the base of midfield.

They enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure, forcing numerous corners, and the second goal came on 17 minutes off back-to-back corners, the first of which was hotly contested by the Yellows as the ball appeared to clearly go out off the back of a Guiseley player.

After clearing that first one, the second one was curled in by Hopper to find an unmarked Elliot Owen to glance a header in to the far corner.

Two became three on 25 minutes when another header was only cleared to the edge of the box, and Ollie Brown shot sharply on the turn through bodies to find the bottom corner.

Only a fine Isherwood save denied Guiseley a fourth, tipping wide Amir Berchil’s shot after he had cut in from the left.

Things went from bad to worse for the Yellows when Max Thompson was forced off injured, to be replaced by Joe Rodwell-Grant, but they did eventually create a chance of their own, an acrobatic effort by Devarn Green saved at his near post by Joe Cracknell.

Any hope that the second half would go on in a different vein were almost extinguished inside three minutes, as Kyle White was allowed to waltz from the corner in to the box past two static defenders, with only a late block by Josh Vela preventing his shot from sneaking in at the near post.

The fourth goal came on 54 minutes, Lucas Odunston’s clipped cross from the right headed across the ‘keeper by Jordan Thewlis.

It could have been more but for two smart low saves by Isherwood, both denying Brown, while at the other end all the Yellows could muster was a half volley by Rodwell-Grant that was beaten away at a comfortable height by Cracknell.

The Yellows, who handed debuts to substitutes Josh Shaw and Jordan Scanlon, are next in action against Scanlon’s former club Hyde next Saturday.
