A STORYTELLER from Hong Kong who has made Warrington her home for three years brought myths and legends from her homeland to life with two special events at Westbrook Library.
The ancient legend of Nian was brought to life by storyteller Ywing, who transformed the library into an interactive setting inspired by her home Hong Kong.
It was no ordinary story hour. Instead of children sitting and listening, they took part in an interactive adventure. The adventure ended with a creative craft session, where children made lucky charms as keepsakes to carry the spirit of the story home with them.
Delivered in both English and Cantonese sessions, the storytelling served as a cultural bridge. By introducing Old Hong Kong and the customs surrounding the Lunar New Year, the session allowed both Hong Kong families and local families to share unique heritage, igniting a sense of wonder and sparking a deep curiosity about the legends of the past.
While the legend of Nian enchanted the children, the event’s success was anchored by the supports and efforts from both Hong Kong and local volunteers in the library now proudly run by the Friends of Westbrook Library.
The event which was a resounding success with parents and children alike would never have been possible without the dedication of the volunteers and committee members who stepped up to keep the library’s doors open.
Ywing’s special praise was reserved for the chair of the Friends of Westbrook Library, Heather Copperwheat. Her vision, leadership and energy had been instrumental in revitalizing the space and turning it into a thriving center for cultural exchange.
“The energy in the room was incredible, but the volunteers provided the foundation,” said Ywing. “The dedication of all volunteers, the committee, especially the chair lady Heather Copperwheat, has turned this library into a place where global cultures can find a local home. They haven’t just saved a library; they’ve revitalized a community.”
Ywing said: “Storytelling has a power that transcends the room. It doesn’t just entertain for an hour, it shapes hearts and minds, providing a source of inspiration that lasts a lifetime.
“ We hope this success inspires others to hire the library for workshops, talks, and cultural events. Increasing these bookings is vital for the financial sustainability of Westbrook Library, and we truly need every bit of community support to keep this place thriving“
