Teenager arrested after youngster taken to hospital following rugby disorder

A 17-year-old male from Widnes has been arrested after a Warrington youngster suffered a serious head injury following fighting after last night’s rugby match between Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The incident occurred on Winwick Road, following the local derby, which also saw disorder inside the stadium between rival fans.

Cheshire Police this afternoon confirmed that a 17-year-old boy from Widnes has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident.
Earlier, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “Detectives are investigating disorder at the Halliwell Jones Stadium during the game between Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings on Friday, January 9.
“Shortly after the match, at around 9.23 pm, a fight broke out on Winwick Road, leaving one boy seriously injured.
“The 17-year-old victim was taken to hospital to be treated.
“A number of witnesses have been spoken to, and enquiries are continuing.”

A statement was also issued by Warrington Wolves in relation to the incident, stating: “Warrington Wolves are aware of an incident involving one of our supporters that occurred last night, who was taken to hospital and is currently receiving medical care.
“We are offering our full support to the family and are working closely with the police and Widnes Vikings in relation to the incident.

“Alternatively, information can be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

A statement was also issued by Widnes Vikings, saying: “Widnes Vikings are aware of an incident involving a supporter of Warrington Wolves that occurred last night, who was taken to hospital and is currently receiving medical care.
“Our thoughts are with the individual involved and their family at this time.”
Warrington Wolves won the match 50-12.
