Warrington Borough Council is urging residents to take action now to stay healthy and reduce pressure on local health services as winter illnesses rise.
Hospitals across the region are under severe strain following a sharp increase in flu cases. Seasonal illnesses such as flu and norovirus can spread quickly in homes, schools, and workplaces – but there are simple steps everyone can take to protect themselves and others:
Getting your winter vaccinations
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent serious illness.
-
- Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are free for eligible groups. Book an appointment through your GP, local pharmacy, the NHS app, or by visiting the living well bus.
- Children can get a free flu vaccine (nasal spray) at school – just complete and return the e-consent form.
The NHS also recommends the RSV vaccine for pregnant women and adults aged 75-79 and pneumococcal vaccine to over 65s. To find out more about winter vaccinations, including eligibility, please visit the NHS website.
Keeping children at home if they are unwell
Children are often key transmitters of flu and other infections. If your child is unwell, please keep them home until they recover. The NHS website offers guidance on when to keep children off school.
Practicing good hygiene
Simple steps make a big difference:
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water
- Keep rooms well-ventilated
- Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or your elbow
- Clean surfaces frequently
- Stay home if you feel unwell
Using the NHS services wisely
- Use NHS 111 online or by phone for non-emergency advice
- Pharmacies can help with minor illnesses
- Only use A&E for emergencies to keep critical care available for those who need it most
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and social care, said: “While so many of us are gearing up for Christmas, winter illnesses are still putting significant pressure on our health services. By getting vaccinated and following simple hygiene precautions, we can all help keep ourselves and our community safe, healthy and well this winter.”
