ROAD and footpath closures taking place as part of the Kingsway Bridge Improvement Scheme are set to continue well into the new year due to delays on the project.

Warrington Borough Council has given notice that the works, which started in the summer for a period of up to 17 weeks, have now been extended until the end of March next year.

The project, which is part of the government’s Town Deal programme, aims to create a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists, especially for students travelling to Cardinal Newman High School. The works, focused on the area around Bridgewater Avenue, have led to traffic delays. To reduce this, the council put new measures in place from August 22nd to improve traffic flow and safety:
The Council has now made an Order under Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 on 21st August 2025. The effect of which is as follows:
Prohibition of Driving & Clearway: A50 Kingsway South from its junction with A50 Kingsway North to its junction with Westy Lane; Grange Avenue from its junction with A50 Kingsway South to its junction with Stringer Crescent; Bridgewater Avenue from its junction with A50 Kingsway South to its junction with Brindley Avenue; A50 Kingsway North from its junction with A50 Kingsway South to its junction with A57 Manchester Road.
Footway Closure: A50 Kingsway South from its junction with A50 Kingsway North to its junction with Westy Lane; A50 Kingsway North from its junction with A50 Kingsway South to its junction with A57 Manchester Road; Farrell Street from its junction with A50 Kingsway North to a point 40m in a westerly direction from Holmsfield Road.
The Order was effective from 25th August 2025 with the restrictions in place for 17 weeks, however, due to delays on site they are now required to remain in place until 31st March 2026, as and when signed on site. The operational hours, alternative routes and reason for the works remains the same as previously advertised.
