RESIDENTS turned out in force to pay their respects at the annual Remembrance Sunday service at Warrington Cenotaph on Bridge Foot, one of a number of events taking place across the town.
The annual Remembrance event commemorates the sacrifice and suffering of war and to pray for the peace of the world.
The town’s armed services paraded to the cenotaph on Bridge Foot from the town hall with civic and church leaders, with other community groups and organisations, followed by the pipes playing ‘Flowers of the Forest’.
At one minute to eleven, Lt. Col. Les Taylor-Duff said:
“They shall grow not old,
as we are left grow old;
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning,
we will remember them.
This was followed by the Last Post and two minutes of silence on the 80th anniversary of the ending of World War II, followed by prayers from church leaders with music provided by the Salvation Army.
There was a scripture reading from Canon Christopher Cunningham, Senior Roman Catholic Priest in Warrington, followed by prayers led by The Revd. Robert Icke, Parish Priest for the Benefice of Latchford, followed by Cllr. Sagheer Zamam, on behalf of Warrington Council of Faiths.
Following the service which ended with the National Anthem, Lt. Col. Taylor-Duff, introduced the Mayor of Warrington, Cllr. Mo Hussain, to veterans and their families.

For those who couldn’t attend, the event was covered live on the Warrington Worldwide Facebook page -see below.
Local road closures were lifted post the remembrance event.
