But this is the part that’s going to be the least healthy.
And finally you have potatoes on the top. This is a mashed potato that’s usually made with milk and butter and some seasoning. It’s not overly healthy (potatoes are mostly just starch and butter is really not that healthy) but it’s not too bad either.
For the cottage pie you layer your meat, then your vegetables and gravy, then your mashed potato mixture. In some cases you might also add some cheese to the top to give it a nice crust once it’s baked. And there you have it, cottage pie.
But is it Healthy?
Now you know what goes into making a cottage pie, and we’ve talked about the health benefits (or not) of different parts of it. When you’re cooking up the vegetables you could use oil, or you could use a little bit of water as needed. This will help you sauté your vegetables without adding in extra calories. And since you’re using herbs (which don’t add calories or unhealthy additives) you don’t need that oil to add flavor. And you don’t need it to make sure your vegetables are sauteed properly either. So why use it at all?
Swapping out the ground beef or ground turkey (even though it technically changes the name of the dish) is another way to cut down some calories. And one big benefit of this is that you’re likely not going to notice much difference. Ground turkey has a milder flavor and can be a little softer, but with all the flavorful veggies and gravy you’re not going to taste the meat much anyway. Lean meats are always a good option when you’re trying to cut back and make something healthier.
