Council leader issues statement condemning all forms of racism

WARRINGTON Borough Council leader Cllr Hans Mundry has issued a public statement condemning all forms of racism.

It comes after the council’s official Facebook page appeared to be targeted by an organised group of people, the vast majority with no apparent link to Warrington.

Cllr Mundry said: “Last week, one of our social media posts was subject to a number of racist comments, from what appeared to be an organised and coordinated approach from a number of people.
“These individuals – the vast majority of whom didn’t appear to be Warrington residents – have been blocked, and their comments deleted.
“But doing this alone isn’t enough. It’s our duty to call this out. As a council, we strongly condemn all forms of racism and hate speech. It’s not Warrington. It’s not who we are. And we’ll continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to it.
“We stand with our residents against discrimination and will continue to promote respect, equality and inclusion.”

ED’s Note: The Warrington Worldwide page has also recently been targeted with racist comments during our coverage on Union flags flown from lamposts and the local Warrington Mela. While freedom of speech is extremely important in the media, we do not endorse any kind of racial hatred. While offensive comments which are reported are often removed, we also leave others in case they require police action. Facebook also has a report facility for offensive comments.
