Fire crews help rescue two people from River Mersey

FOUR fire crews were called out to help rescue two people, including an 11-year-old boy, from the River Mersey near Sankey Bridges, Warrington, on Monday afternoon.

At 16:37, four fire engines from Widnes, Powey Lane, Knutsford and Lymm, plus the aerial ladder platform, boat rescue unit and rope rescue unit responded to a water rescue involving two people in the River Mersey near Sunflower Drive, off Old Liverpool Road.
One person was quickly removed and treated by firefighters, while the second was successfully brought to safety using a raft.
Both individuals were conscious and breathing. One was assessed for possible cold-related effects and later cleared to return home following medical checks.
Police and ambulance services also attended.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson confirmed: “At around 4.30pm on Monday 1 September. Police were called to reports of a child in the river Mersey, near Sunflower Drive, Great Sankey.
“Police, fire and ambulance attended, and an 11-year-old boy was found in the water. The boy was removed from the water and passed to the care of paramedics.”
