RESIDENTS are being invited to share their views on council plans to create better walking and cycling connections between the town centre and the green spaces around the Wilderspool Causeway area of Warrington.
A consultation on the Causeway Park access improvements scheme begins today, Tuesday, 2 September, and runs until Friday, 3 October 2025.
Part of Warrington’s ongoing government funded Town Deal programme, the scheme focuses on creating a new, traffic-free walking and cycling route that will run parallel to Wilderspool Causeway.
This new path will connect existing paths at Brian Bevan Island and Manx Road, providing residents with easier access towards the town centre, as well as to Causeway Park, Wilderspool Community Woodland, and the Trans Pennine Trail.
Currently, access to Causeway Park from the north is difficult, forcing pedestrians to take a longer route or use a narrow, often obstructed path on River Road. The new scheme will address these issues by:
• Providing a new pedestrian and cycle entrance to the park from the north.
• Making use of an existing, underused green space near Manx Road and River Road.
• Widening and resurfacing existing footpaths within the park.
• Installing new benches, street lighting, and tidying up vegetation.
• Creating an improved and safer pedestrian and cycle crossing point on Gainsborough Road.
The council is also consulting on a potential extension of the scheme south of Gainsborough Road, which would connect to the Trans Pennine Trail near the A49, subject to securing additional funding.
In addition, the consultation will cover a separate proposal to improve traffic flow and safety near Priestley College. The plans include a new bus layby on Loushers Lane to prevent buses from blocking the road, which is a common issue during peak times.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposals.
You can share your views by filling out the online survey, available from today, Tuesday 2 September, until Friday 3 October.
Drop-in consultation events – giving you the opportunity to see the plans and ask the team any questions you may have – will also be held at St John’s United Reformed Church on Wilderspool Causeway on the following dates:
• Monday 15 September, 12noon – 7pm
• Saturday 20 September, 1pm – 3pm
Warrington Borough Council Leader and Cabinet Member for transport, Cllr Hans Mundry, said: “This new scheme is a fantastic opportunity to improve connectivity and encourage more people to choose walking and cycling for their journeys, a key part of our sustainable travel goals. By creating a safe, traffic-free route, we’re aiming not only to enhance access to Causeway Park and other green spaces but also make it easier and more enjoyable for residents to get around.
“We want to hear the views of as many people as possible on these plans. Your feedback will help us ensure we deliver a scheme that meets the needs of our community. Please take a look at the proposals, either by filling out our online survey or by coming to one of our public events.”
