WARRINGTON Borough Council has implemented new traffic management measures to reduce disruption for motorists and pedestrians during the ongoing Kingsway Bridge Improvement Scheme.
The project, which is part of the government’s Town Deal programme, aims to create a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists, especially for students traveling to Cardinal Newman High School.
The works, focused on the area around Bridgewater Avenue, have led to traffic delays. To reduce this, the council is putting new measures in place from today 22 August to improve traffic flow and safety:
• Temporary closure of access to and from Bridgewater Avenue: This change will simplify the temporary traffic signals and allow vehicles to move more smoothly through the area.
• This is in addition to a temporary controlled crossing point across Kingsway which has been in place from the start of the works. All local residents are encouraged to use this new crossing to safely get across the road.
While the closure of Bridgewater Avenue will create some temporary diversions for local residents, it has been timed to ensure that access to Cardinal Newman High School is maintained when the new school year begins in September. The closure is taking place during restricted hours to suit the school’s start and finish times.
Letters are being distributed to residents on affected streets to inform them of the new diversions.
The Kingsway Bridge Improvement Scheme will eventually include a new controlled crossing on the busy A50 Kingsway, connecting Grange Avenue and Bridgewater Avenue. Later phases of the project will extend these active travel improvements across the bridge and link to Kingsway North and Farrell Street. The scheme was shaped by public consultation in 2024.
The council apologises for any inconvenience caused by the works and is continuously monitoring the situation. Additional measures will be considered as the project moves forward.
