Temperatures of 30 degrees forecast – wildfires warning

WITH temperatures of 30 degrees forecast in Warrington around noon today – and feeling more like 34 degrees – RosPA, the Royl Society for the Prevention of Accidents – is urging people to take hot weather risks seriously.

Amber alerts have been issued in several parts of the country by the Met Office and wildfires have broken out in areas as far apart as Dorset and Scotland.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s wildfire team has already been called out in Warrington – and fortunately managed to control a blaze, believed to have been started deliberately, before it got out of hand.
But RosPA says there are many simple actions that can be taken by members of the public which can prevent major incidents, protect property and potentially, save lives.
These include disposing of cigarettes property, supervise barbecues, clear away dry vegetation near property and always follow local fire safety guidance.
Steve Cole, director of policy at RoSPA said: “These fires in various areas, are a stark reminder that the UK is not immune to the dangers of extreme heat. With temperatures soaring and vegetation drying out, the risk of wildfires increases dramatically—even in urban and coastal areas.
“The fact is that many wildfires are preventable. Simple actions—like properly disposing of cigarettes, and avoiding open flames—can make a huge difference.”

Public safety advice during hot weather includes:
* Avoid open flames: Do not light barbecues (especially disposable barbecues), campfires, or disposable grills in parks, woodlands, or heathland areas.
* Dispose of cigarettes responsibly: Never discard cigarette ends on the ground, especially in dry grassy areas.
* Stay alert: Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 999.
* Protect your property: Clear dry vegetation from around your home and follow local fire safety guidance.
