Excitement as three baby Red Squirrels born at Walton Gardens Zoo

THERE has been excitement at Walton Gardens Children’s Zoo in Warrington with the arrival of three baby Red Squirrels.

Following some restoration work to the red squirrels’ enclosure, two female red squirrels arrived from the Welsh Mountain Zoo in September 2024 and were joined shortly after by a male from the Yorkshire Arboretum.

Since then, they’ve been quietly settling in as part of the red squirrel breeding programme at Walton Gardens, which is managed by their friends at the Welsh Mountain Zoo.

These shy little creatures usually keep to their nest boxes during the day, but recently something truly special happened. Three tiny kittens exploring their enclosure for the very first time! At around four weeks old, they’re already climbing and discovering their new world.
Rangers at the zoo be working closely with the Welsh Mountain Zoo to determine the future of the kittens, whether they’ll stay in the breeding programme, or be released into the wild. Either way, the zoo rangers are incredibly proud to be part of this important conservation effort.
