A special event is being planned to celebrate the hard work of all those who have helped create a new garden at St Mary’s Church in Lymm.
An open afternoon will take place at the church hall gardens on Crouchley Lane behind the Church Hall on August 24th from 1pm-4pm.
This will be to celebrate the hard work of all who have helped and who have contributed to the renaissance, from a briar patch to a garden once more.
The garden is a space for recreation and relaxation and when practical, for members of the Church and others to gather. It is intended as a community resource not a memorial garden. The planting of the Spring Garden is in memory of Sue Eckersall but the flowers and planting are for all to enjoy. There will also be a memorial bench and tree that a Lymm family has donated in memory of their loved one.

The original idea came when Rev Jill was at the church in 2022 and the ECO group comprising of Rev Jill Elson, George Bainton and Derek Buckthorne were looking to work towards a Bronze Eco Award for the Church (which was achieved before Jill left). As part of this the group looked at reclaiming the garden at the back of the Church Hall. It was completely overgrown with brambles because no one had been to work on it.
The PCC agreed that the group could clear it and use the space to grow flowers and other things and perhaps use it for Church Services. The clearing took time but when this was done, the group asked if anyone had any suggestions for planting and a member of the PCC Venessa Lees suggested the Spring Garden should be in memory of Sue Eckersall. This part of the garden is beautiful in spring time.
Rev Jill Elson managed to get a new gate and Kath Buckley painted a design on it based on a children’s competition organised by Rev Jill.
After a lot of help various plans have been put together for what to plant where. Tim Old is now leading the team looking after the garden.

The next Planting phase will be sensory garden at the back of the hall. The church hopes to open the garden up every Sunday afternoon for the foreseeable future as a place for children’s events, high teas and of course quiet contemplation. A place for all in Lymm to enjoy.
