DANGEROUS acts of vandalism at the Bridgewater Canal in Little Bollington near Lymm have raised serious safety concerns, prompting local councillor Graham Gowland to call on parents to speak with their children.
The vandalism targeted a tarpaulin that had been installed to hold back canal water following a major breach. Despite recent significant repair work, the tarpaulin was deliberately slashed using sharp knives, allowing water to escape again and threatening further damage to boats, canal infrastructure, and public safety.
After the initial slashing, a temporary tarpaulin was fitted – but that too has now been cut open in a second deliberate attack. Peel Holdings, who manage the canal, are aware of the situation and are taking further action to secure the site.
The incident is believed to involve three boys, aged 11 to 13, who were seen on pushbikes near the Bridgewater Canal. Two were wearing black tops, one pale blue, and one was described as stocky in build.
“This wasn’t a prank – it was extremely dangerous,” said Cllr Gowland. “The canal was already weakened following a major breach. Engineers worked hard to repair the site, and this deliberate vandalism risks undoing all that – and worse, it could have led to someone being seriously injured or even killed.”
“These boys came back a second time to slash the temporary cover – they knew what they were doing. I’m urging parents and carers in the area to talk to their children. They need to understand just how serious this is.”
“This is about protecting everyone – including those involved.”
Cllr Gowland praised the quick response of Peel’s teams but warned that such acts are not only criminal but potentially catastrophic.
Anyone with information is urged to report it to Peel Holdings or to contact the police.
