THE Labour Party has announced its candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Bewsey and Whitecross ward on Thursday, July 31st.

Young, passionate and dedicated to her community, Maitane Akpan has been selected as the fresh-voiced Labour candidate in the by-election for the seat on Warrington Borough Council.
Born and raised in Warrington, Ms Akpan, brings an eager and vibrant energy to tackling the challenges facing the local community and seizing the opportunities for it to grow and thrive.
The Labour Candidate is specifically committed to improving educational outcomes for young people across the area, fighting for improved access to health services in Warrington and pushing for better flood defences to protect the community in the years ahead.

Ms Akpan said: “I’m incredibly grateful to the local members for selecting me. I’m not your typical candidate and that’s exactly why I’m standing.
“For years, the Tories have decimated local services and left you people with fewer opportunities, forcing many to move away to bigger cities. But with Labour, we’re starting to see change.
“I want to make sure that change includes a seat at the table for young people. We need fresh perspectives in local decision-making and a real push to get the next generation investing in their communities.
“I’m from Warrington, I love our area, and I know so many young people who feel the same. I want to help them be part of building something better here at home.”
Mr Akpan currently works as a tutor supporting students from all backgrounds in Maths, English and Science and is a strong believer is supporting pupils not just academically, but helping them to build confidence, resilience and long-term aspiration.
In recent years, the Labour candidate has volunteer in Tanzania to expand access to education and has organised community action days to bring awareness to local issues.
Locally, she has volunteered her time and efforts with the Peace Centre and shadowed mental health professional at Hollins Park Hospital, reinforcing a strong believe in properly funded, accessible mental health and youth services.

Motivated by fairness and compassion and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, no matter their postcode or background, Ms Akpan is also a published author of a children’s book, using creativity to promote Maths and spark curiosity in young minds.
She added: “It would be an honour if you voted for me on 31 July. I represent a new generation ready to step up and fight for our community. I understand the challenges young people and working families face because I work with children and see those struggles every day.
“I’m not here to do politics as usual – I’m here to bring energy, fresh ideas, and real accountability. Warrington deserves a councillor who listens, who acts and who truly cares about building a fairer, stronger future for everyone.”
