TOWN Hall chiefs at Warrington are being asked to approve the development of three padel tennis courts at Birchwood Community Hub
They would be installed and managed by an appointed external padel operator – at no cost to the borough council.
Padel is said to be one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is described as a blend of tennis and squash and is increasingly popular as it is easy to learn.
There are currently no padel courts in East Warrington although courts have been provided in the south of the borough, at Grappenhall Village Tennis Club and Warrington Sports Club.
The proposal, to be considered by the borough council’s cabinet on July 14, is to convert two underused outdoor tennis courts at Birchwood Community Hub.
There would be no cost to the council, as the approved operator would be responsible for all area of the project, including seeking planning consent, installation and operation.
The council, as landowner, would receive a fixed rent and a share of the revenue income. The courts would be open to all members of the public – and coaching, provided by the approved operator, would be available.
