VIDEO: AN amateur film-maker from Burtonwood, Warrington, has produced an award-winning short film highlighting the importance of creative expression in mental health recovery.
The Quiet Space, produced by Mental Health Support worker Justin Walker, is a unique project involving a collaboration between himself and two service users, individuals who are under a community mental health team.
Miles plays the lead role but also contributed to the initial concept/idea for the film’s story. Sean provided the film’s music score which complements the film perfectly. The Quiet Space is a science fiction film, the story follows an astronaut who crash lands on a distant planet, as the only survivor he finds an apocalyptic cityscape, while exploring this ruined city he begins to lose his grip on reality. The film explores themes of loneliness and mental health decline.
Justin said: “Making this film was a challenge but all involved enjoyed the process and the end result; shot and edited on a smartphone with zero budget…..well I actually spent £12 on an astronaut costume from vinted!”
It was shot completely on green screen on location at Miles’ property. The film was inspired by real-life experiences of the lead actor and others Justin has supported over the years. The film aims to break down the stigma of mental health and those who experiences/struggle with mental health issues. The film has won 2 awards thus far.
