FORMER Warrington Borough Council Leader Russ Bowden has fired a broadside at local Conservatives following an abusive tweet posted by their candidate for the forthcoming parish by-elections in Culcheth & Glazebury and Croft.
Following the news of Culcheth resident Sue Mitchell being the Conservative candidate for both by-elections, former Labour leader Russ Bowden, who resigned from his role citing online abuse as one of the reasons, took to twitter posting: “Incredible to think that One Warrington (Warrington Conservatives) judge this woman fit to even represent “them,” let alone the good people of Culcheth, Glazebury & Croft. Are there really no depths that they won’t plumb?”
The tweet appeared to be targeted at current Warrington Borough Council Labour leader Cllr. Hans Mundry.
In response to the abusive tweet a Conservative spokesman said “We are looking into this matter.”

Sue Mitchell, who had sent out a press release announcing her selection, was given an opportunity to respond, but has chosen to remain silent.
The press release announcing her as the candidate stated: “Warrington Conservatives have announced their candidate for the upcoming by-elections in Culcheth & Glazebury and Croft. Sue Mitchell, who lives in Culcheth, is standing to represent both Parishes, with Parish Councillor for Culcheth & Glazebury, Paul Campbell, saying “Sue will make an excellent Parish Councillor and we are thrilled to have her on board.”
Sue has worked in the nuclear industry at Risley for over 20 years and is keen to promote STEM subjects to students living in the villages.
Sue first lived in Culcheth in 2011 and her son attended Culcheth High School, where he was a head student and a sports ambassador for both the school and the town. Sue was an avid supporter of the then Culcheth-2-Soweto programme, raising funds and hosting a student from Soweto in her home. Sue is committed to maintaining youth opportunities and ensuring the best possible prospects for the next generation. Most Sundays, Sue can be found volunteering at The Ukrainian Hub in The Daten Club.
Sue’s candidate profile page on Facebook describes her as someone who is ‘not afraid to challenge the rhetoric’.
Sue was a pivotal figure in the successful Central 6 Warrington Residents Campaign to rid the inner wards of controversial Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. Sue calculated that traffic jams caused by the closure of certain roads, increased pollution and carbon emissions had risen as a result, having a detrimental effect on air quality. Sue is not afraid to hold Warrington Borough Council to account.
Sue is passionate about maintaining healthy living standards for all ages and is a strong supporter of suicide prevention.
Sue’s hobbies and interests include overseas travel, reading, walking and animal welfare. Sue is currently the owner of 3 rescue dogs. Having rescued dogs since 1998, she has also spent time volunteering at a dog rescue in Romania in 2019.
Sue says “I am honoured to have been selected by the Warrington Conservatives as their candidate in the Culcheth & Glazebury and Croft By-elections. The heart of every village is the community; the residents that live within, the businesses that serve our needs, and the charities that provide vital support when the Borough Council funding can’t meet demand. It will be a privilege to represent and support all aspects of our communities.
“I am delighted that our Parish Councils have been successful in the return of the Remembrance Sunday Parade which will take place on 10th November 2024. I hope to meet more of our residents on the day.”
Parish Councillor for Culcheth & Glazebury and Croft, Val Allen, said “Myself and the rest of the Conservative Parish Councillors look forward, with positive anticipation, to welcoming Sue to our team and working with her in the very near future.”

Man child throwing his toys out. He is the toxic one and has been proven. If you’re reading this grow up
I was only thinking about my 21st Century MSc that I did at the University in my front garden – aka Padgate Campus – how things have changed with regard to Social Media in 2011. Back then there were flame wars on Warrington Worldwide, Borough Councillors didn’t do social media and only occasionally emailed their constituents.
What a change now they are using Social Media to influence people, there are more media channels to use and they claim to be experts with little knowledge, inofrmation or participation.
Gone are the face to face contacts but with the likes of “X”, Instagram, WhatsApp I suppose like Trump you have to go with the flow Musk Elon in the background pulling the strings and influencing the public.
Just saying
Sue writes like a 12 year old.
Sue hasnt worked in the nuclear industry at Risley for over 20 years, unless Manchester, Liverpool and Widnes count.
Sue thinks that independents are the way to go in local elections, unless you want to be elected.
I’d check she actually lives in the area too, she didnt when she was kicking off about LTNs, although she didnt live in latchford either.
Maybe Russ is annoyed with her since she called him a “bus wanker” on that hate filled facebook group all of the disturbed right wingers hang out on.
What is going on in Cultcheth has Elon Musk moved in to stir the pot as he is doing slagging off the UK?
I can see why it is becoming a very controversial place now from the coverage it’s receiving but it’s not the place I know anymore from my visits of old – something has changed and not for the better.
What an unedifying situation to have permeated the local political scene, not just that applying to Culcheth and its environs. It ill-serves any protagonists when they use Social Media to crudely trade insults, as many have found to their cost. When politicians use it to snipe at opponents, it becomes a matter of concern to the electorate, since it casts doubt on the judgement and/or suitability of all the politicians involved.
