Litter Networks kept busy on World Clean Up Day

WARRINGTON’S Litter Networks were kept busty recently as part of World Clean Up Day earlier this month.

Different groups in different litter networks groups across Warrington coordinated on the weekend of September 18-19 to complete a series of eight local litter picks for World Clean Up Day.

These took place in Orford Park, Westy Park and Dallam Centre on the Saturday, and Brickfield Park, Orford, Westbrook Centre, Bewsey, Latchford and Whitecross on Sunday.
Altogether an incredible 170 bags of litter were collected from all eight locations across the town.
Spokesperson Tony Dixon said: “We hope that strengthened and active local groups with local leadership will be the lasting legacy of the weekend, particularly in Bewsey, Orford and Dallam.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported the weekend, particularly from Bewsey, Dallam, Orford, Latchford, Westbrook, Winwick, Whitecross litter networks and the cross support from all the other local networks. We are grateful for public encouragement and support, and kind offers of drinks during the pick (eg in Orford and Dallam) which were greatly appreciated!
“The exercise has made a big difference to the local environment in each chosen location and has helped to expand the group of experienced litter network leaders.
“It’s not perfect yet, we know how much more there is to be done but we are making headway,” added Tony.
Litternetworks was founded locally in late 2020 in Lymm, by Paul Connor and James Coates. All of the local groups are looking out for volunteers and supporters to join what has become a growing movement.
In total the 21 litter networks across Warrington now have a membership of over 1,700.
One regular local group (the free-ranging Tuesday team) does two picks a week and has collected over 3,400 sacks of litter so far this year. This is an amazing fourfold increase on their performance in 2020.
Forthcoming litter picks include Grappenhall PC litter-pick on Saturday 2/10/21.
There is also a new monthly Sunday litter team recently started. Their next event will be at Hood Manor Centre on October 10th. Please see the relevant litter network facebook pages for more details.
Anyone who wishes to join in future litter picks can contact any of the local groups at litternetworks.org to get involved.
Tony added: “We want to thank all the staff at Warrington Borough Council for their support for our volunteer teams, with providing and collecting blue bags. WBC also supports these events with the loan of essential kit.
“Together we are determined to see Warrington take the crown as the tidiest large town (or maybe tidiest city?) in North Cheshire. If any readers would like to join this sociable peaceful and mindful green movement they can find out mofre information at www.litternetworks.org
The Litter Networks were the first recipients of a Warrington Worldwide Legacy project grant of £500 to help expand groups across the town.
