Plan to replace crumbling wall at Warrington Library

A PLAN to replace a crumbling wall at the rear of Warrington Library is to come before the next meeting of the borough council’s development management committee.

Warrington Borough Council planning fficers are recommending the scheme be approved as there will be “less than substantial” harm to the Grade 2 Listed building while there will be significant benefit to the public.
The plan is to demolish the existing wall – which is currently propped up on a temporary basis – and replace it on a new foundation.

Councillors will also be asked to grant Listed Building consent.
The principle of development is considered to be acceptable and would allow the ongoing and safe operation of the community facility.
The design, height and method of construction of the new retaining wall is considered to be in keeping with the character and appearance of the existing.
Although demolition of the existing wall will result in the loss of historic fabric, it appears that the wall has been rebuilt at some time in the past.
The historic significance of Warrington Library lies within its aesthetic, communal and evidential value. This value arises predominantly from the main library building, the committee will be told.
