Plans to extend scout hut which once housed prisoners of war

PLANS have been submitted for an extension to the headquarters building of the 10th Warrington Scouts in Highfields Road, Great Sankey.

The scheme will involve the demolition of an existing temporary building housing a kitchen and toilets adjoining the main scout hut.
Scouts have been raising funds for the extension for some years.
The scout hut has an interesting history. It was used to house Italian prisoners-of-war during World War 2, when it was on Farnworth Road, next to an anti-aircraft battery. The 10th Warrington Scouts acquired it in 1959 when they moved it to land owned by St Mary’s Church, with who they are linked.

A new roof was added and the building opened in 1960. But the temporary building, which was added in the 1990s, is in a deteriorating condition and the plan is to replace it.
The proposals will be considered by Warrington planning chiefs in the near future
