As well as remembering and honouring all those who have lost their lives in conflict, Saturday’s Festival of Remembrance at the Parr Hall, will also acknowledge the work done by members of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps during the First World War.
The Festival programme will feature on its front cover (with the kind permission of the Imperial War Museum), one of the memorable images of the First World War; Members of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps tending British war graves at Abbeville, 15 September 1917.
Formed one hundred years ago this year, the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps would eventually be made up of some 57,000 volunteers, working across a wide range of activities including cooking and catering, printing and motor vehicle maintenance. The photograph, by John Warwick Brooke, clearly portrays the hard work done and the care taken to look after the graves of the fallen, even while the war was still being fought.
Being staged by Warrington Male Voice Choir tomorrow (Saturday 4 November) and starting at 7pm, the Festival will also feature Warrington Male Voice Choir, The Combined Bands of The Lancashire Artillery & The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, Service Cadet contingents, an audience sing-along and a Drumhead Service of Remembrance & Reflection led by The Revd Canon Paul Wilson and involving members of Warrington Council of Faiths.
The evening will help raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2017 & ssafa – the Armed Forces charity,
