Nurseries win healthy food awards

EIGHT of Warrington’s nurseries have been presented with Healthier Together awards.
The awards, presented at the Town Hall by the Mayor, Cllr Peter Carey, recognised the nurseries’ efforts in providing healthy food and in educating pre-school children about healthy eating.
To gain the award the nurseries have had to meet exacting requirements. The borough council’s executive member for public protection, Cllr David Keane, explained: “Each nursery has had to provide the council with a portfolio of evidence, including its policies and codes of practice, proving that they have been working towards the government’s
voluntary ‘Eat Better, Start Better’ nutritional guidelines.
“The nurseries also have to supply details of all the food they provide to the average three-year-old for a week, which the council then has nutritionally analysed.
“Only when the council is satisfied that the nurseries have met the high standards required do they qualify for the award.”
The eight award-winning nurseries are: ABC 123, Birch Grove Day Nursery, Busy Nought to Five Great Sankey, Kids Planet Beamont, Kids Planet Lymm, Tiggy Winkles, University of Chester Nursery and Wind in the Willows.
Cllr Keane added: “Evidence shows that learning about healthy eating early in life helps children to develop a lifestyle which benefits their health as adults. The excellent work these nurseries are doing today will not only help these children to become healthy adults, it will also help society to reduce the incidence of obesity and other diet-health problems in future years.”
