AN independent candidate has won a by-election victory at Warrington – polling more votes than three political parties combined.
Kath Cookson came top of the poll in the contest for a vacant seat on Winwick Parish Council.
She polled 226 votes while the Labour, Conservative and UKIP candidates polled 187 votes between them.
The full result was as follows:
Kath Cookson (Ind) 226; Michael Matthews (Labour) 90; Andrew Fairfoull (UKIP) 62; David Shaw (Ind) 57; Carole Thewsey (Cons) 35.
There was a 25.2 per cent turnout.
After the result was declared, a spokesman for Warrington North Labour Party said: “Our warmest congratulations go to Kath Cookson, and we wish her all the best in her new role.
“This election was a well-fought contest between two excellent local candidates, Kath Cookson and Mike Matthews.
“What is clear is that, despite their hype, UKIP have failed to take off in north Warrington and the Tories are left to pick over the wreckage of a humiliating defeat.”

With sour grapes comments like that.. is it any wonder people voted for the independent??
The Labour spokesman (Mr Vobe?) ignores the fact that they lost by 136 votes to have a dig, isn’t it typical of the major parties who ALL got battered.
Hopefully this Independent success is the future.
I beleive we should go down the road to having Independant Parish and WBC councillors, at least they will c are about local issues and not follow party lines with national issues
Most sensible voters will totally agree jim, trouble is ‘ mob rule’ seems to take over with politics, we do however have some very good councillors from all major parties who do their best for residents ,but as you say if they were totally independent they would be able to represent the wards without having to worry about party whips
Is that because you can’t get elected any other way Jim?
