WARRINGTON Collegiate travel student Stephen Greenall is set to fly out to Bolivia for a three-month volunteering programme.
Stephen, who turns 18 just days before he jets off, is the youngest volunteer on the project, run by the International Citizenship Service in partnership with the Department for International Development.
He said: “I was absolutely thrilled to be selected. Everyone else was either at university or just finished and we underwent a really rigorous selection day with teambuilding tasks, interviews and presentations.
“When people lack their basic human rights, they are denied opportunities and become trapped in cycles of poverty and inequality.
“We will be working with communities to support people to understand their rights and put them into action so they are empowered to change their own lives for the better.”
As part of the package Stephen has to raise £800 before the end of May.
Charlotte Collins, Lecturer in Tourism at Warrington Collegiate, is tremendously proud of Stephen.
She said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Stephen who is a remarkable young man. His enthusiasm for his course and career is matched by his selfless approach to others. We’re all supporting him at college with his fundraising and looking forward to hearing about all his adventures when he gets back.”
When Stephen returns from Bolivia he will give a series of presentations to others about the project, to raise awareness and encourage other young people to get involved in volunteering.
National Volunteers’ Week takes place from June 1st to 7th.
