Gas plant gets the go-ahead

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given the green light for a liquefied natural gas compound including a vent stack nearly 60ft high.
Appleton Parish Council had lodged objections to the scheme put forward by the Eddie Stobart transport group for the Appleton Thorn Industrial Estate.
But members of the borough’s planning committee approved the development after hearing it would lower carbon emissions in Warrington – and reduce the carbon footprint of the Stobart Group.
The compound will be within the existing Stobart distribution centre in Langford Way, Appleton Thorn.
Parish councillors had objected because of the height and size of proposed gas storage vessels, the highest of which would, including the vent stack, be 18.1 metres high – nearly 60ft..
They were also concerned at the size of the overall footprint of the site – nine metres by 14 metres.
Planning officers admitted the height of the tallest structure would be “significant” but pointed out that it was within a commercial/industrial site, surrounded by buildings .
more than 10 metres high.
They said the location was acceptable and the resultant reduction in carbon emissions met a key objective of planning policy.
It is said that vehicles in the Eddie Stobart fleet travel the equivalent of going round the world 24 times every day.
