CULTURE Warrington – the arts charity for the borough – has been commissioned by the national Poetry By Heart initiative to deliver a regional competition event to provide a platform for young people’s passion for poetry.
Pupils from schools across Cheshire will compete by reciting poetry they have learned off by heart and performing this on the night to friends, family and general public.
Following the regional heats, the winners will attend a national competition in London.
A spokesperson for Culture Warrington said: “Students will be asked to recite one poem that was published before 1914 and one poem from the Poetry By Heart anthology published in or after 1914.
“The ethos underpinning Poetry By Heart is ‘Serious Fun’. As well as the county contest being a serious competition it will be a fun community occasion attended by students, their families and friends.”
The event will be held at the Studio Theatre at Pyramid arts centre, Warrington, on Thursday March 28 at 6.30pm. The competition culminates in a finals weekend which will take place Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
