MORE than 50 homes would be built on a disused rugby pitch at Appleton – if developers had their way.
Proposals for the 55 two-storey houses have been drawn up by Warrington Rugby Union Club – now part of the Walton-based Warrington Sports Club.
A “linear park” and a small play area would also be included in the scheme, off Bridge Lane
Club representatives gave a presentation on the project at a meeting of Appleton Parish Council.
The Bridge Lane ground has not been used since a disastrous fire destroyed the clubhouse some years ago, forcing the rugby club to re-locate to Walton and later merge with Warrington Sports Club.
It is owned by the borough council, but the rugby club has a 100-year lease on the land.
A number of proposals have been put forward for the land over the years, including one for a medical centre and an earlier, larger housing scheme which would have also included a community centre.
Residents of the Bridge Lane area were opposed to the earlier housing scheme and the club says it will consult with them before pressing ahead with the proposals.
