YOUNG entrepreneurs at Priestley College are making a business out of wire – one of the materials on which Warrington’s economy was originally built.
Eight students are creating jewellery from wire with their company, called Wireworks, and are now aiming to sell goods and shares in their company.
Student Joseph McGurty, who developed the idea and learned the technique for making the jewellery from youtube clips, said: “I thought we could make a business out of wire as well as it tied in with the history of the local area.
“People can watch us make the jewellery in front of them and one of our biggest selling points is that the items are unique.”
The team, who are all studying BTEC Business Studies, are working with two mentors, Alan Hunter formerly from ICI and Nick Mullins from Rock Oil, to develop their business.
The students are Joseph Mcgurty, Chloe Hatton, Aimee Walker, Alex Leslie, Saabah Mohammed, Georgina Harrington and Charmie Valdez.
None of the students had ever made jewellery before. They bought toolkits and are now producing intricate trinkets to sell at open evenings and other events.
The company will be entered into the Warrington finals of the Young Enterprise competition.
