DEPUTY leader of Warrington Borough Council Cllr Mike Hannon was condemned to the stocks during a Medieval Market on Saturday.
But it was all in good fun and the “town centre champion” was soon rescued by a couple of knights in shining armour.
Large crowds attended the successful event in the town centre. There has been a market in Warrington since 1255 and it was arranged to celebrate the market history from early years to modern day.
On the day the indoor market had the highest footfall this year with many out of town shoppers visiting.
Customers had the opportunity to shoot a bow and arrow at a medieval knight and to make a medieval coin. Other attractions included birds of prey, Viking ships, swing boats, medieval craft stalls and historic cannon exhibited at the market entrance.
In 1255 the population of Warrington was around 600 people. Today the market employs around 600 people serving a local population of over 200,000.
Cllr Hannon said: “This is the first time we have run a medieval market and we are delighted with the response and enthusiasm shown by visitors to the town centre – and being rescued by knights was also a first for me!”
