SHOPPERS at Warrington Market on Saturday, September 8 will get a chance to meet a medieval knight – but could also end up locked in the stocks!
The market is turning back the clock to 1255, the year Warrington was granted permission to hold its first market.
There will be a medieval market and antiques fair for the whole family to enjoy between 10-4pm.
William Le Boteler – the first lord of the manor (aka Tony Whittaker) – who was granted the first market charter in 1255 will be there and shoppers and stallholders are being invited to get dressed up in medieval outfits and get into the spirit of the day.
The event is to celebrate the market and its important place in the town’s rich history and there will be various themed activities including medieval market stalls, portraits, food, hog roasts, crafts and health products.
There will also be crossbow activities for children, donkey rides, a monk’s tavern’ Punch and Judy, antiques fair, mystical fairies, Dark Age/Viking re-enactments, etc
Cllr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the borough council, said: “This promises to be a great day for all the family with a fascinating mix of fun and games together with local history so come along for a medieval day out.”

There are one or two people I would love to see locked in the stocks and I would happily supply the rotten eggsand tomatoes for people to throw at them.
Don’t forget to come and visit the Antique, Collectables, Vintage and Book Fair which is taking place inside the market on Saturday. It’s on the rear events hall and entry is free of charge!
