FAMILIES in Warrington are being urged to support children’s charity the NSPCC – with a clear-out of their old clothes.
Every bag of clothes donated via the NSPCC’s official partner, Clothes Aid, will earn shoppers a £5 voucher to spend at a town centre store as the new autumn collections and back-to-school offers are launched.
The NSPCC will receive £300 for every tonne of clothing collected – the equivalent of around 200 bags.
To take part, members of the public should fill a large bag with their unwanted clothes, shoes, belts and bags, and call Clothes Aid’s helpline on 08450 722 780 to arrange a convenient collection time.
A £5 shopping voucher will be given for each full bag of clothing collected.
The money raised by the new scheme could make a big difference to the lives of children and young people in Warrington and across the UK.
It could pay for more ChildLine counsellors to answer contacts from children by phone and online, help the NSPCC answer more calls from adults with concerns about a child and enable the charity to develop its pioneering services for children who have suffered abuse and harm.
A recent survey found that the average UK household owns around £4,000 worth of clothes and that around 30 per cent of clothing in wardrobes has not been worn for at least a year.
An estimated £140 million worth (around 350,000 tonnes) of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year, creating a huge amount of unnecessary waste.
Emma Taylor, corporate fundraising manager at the NSPCC said: “Clearing out old clothes is a great way for people to support the NSPCC. The charity relies on the generosity of the general public and the money raised through this fantastic promotion will help the NSPCC to continue to protect vulnerable children.”
