A WARRINGTON school, due to close its doors for the last time in August, is offering former pupils, staff and members of the local community a final chance to visit.
Woolston High School opened in 1957 – as Woolston Secondary Modern School – led by headmaster Daniel Doherty until 1977.
Now current headteacher Jill Robinson, who has been at the school since 2004, and her staff are preparing to show visitors around the school tomorrow (Friday) between 11am and 1pm and 3pm and 4.30pm and also on Saturday between 10am-12 noon.
There will also be a concert put on by former pupils on tomorrow evening.
Mrs Robinson and the staff are anxious to hear memories of former pupils and staff to be added to the school’s archives.
Memorabilia and photographs from the early life of the school as well as a flavour of education in 2012 will be on display.
Visitors will also be able to take part in a variety of fun activities including a 1950s-style spelling test, a fitness challenge and an opportunity to contribute their memories to the school’s archives.
A wall of memories is being created – and visitors will be able to contribute.
From its beginnings, drama and music have been a strong part of school life and to celebrate this former pupils are putting on a musical extravaganza on Saturday evening, with a range of solo and group performances.
Tickets to visit the school and for the evening concert are available from the school website and school reception or by calling 01925 493349.
The future of the school buildings is surrounded by controversy at present.
Warrington Borough Council wants to use them for a new Special Educational Needs school.
But a group of Woolston parents wants to establish The Kings School – a Free School independent of the borough council – on the site.
As yet, it is not clear which scheme will go ahead.
