MP Helen Jones has called on the Government to take action to help people on middle and low incomes in next week’s budget and drop its “obsession” with giving tax breaks to the very wealthy.
The Warrington North MP (pictured) said: “Next week’s budget is a chance for the Tory-led Government to drop its obsession with giving tax breaks to the very wealthy and instead deliver support to families who are feeling the squeeze.
“David Cameron and George Osborne have been more concerned with delivering tax-giveaways for the banks and the very wealthy since they came into Government.
“At the same time they are taking almost £4,000 away from working families on low incomes through changes to Working Tax Credits.
“Towns like Warrington need to see the Government introducing a real plan to boost jobs and growth. Without this, the deficit will be harder to clear and borrowing will continue to rise as it already has under the Tory-led Government.
“The Government should cancel the planned cut to tax credits and can pay for it by reducing the rate at which top rate taxpayers can claim pension tax relief. That’s the fair thing to do.”
Ms Jones joined with Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett to call for the Government not to drop the tax credits bombshell on low income families.
Mr Hannett said: “Thousands of Usdaw’s members are faced with losing over 20 per cent of their total household income, just because they are unable to find extra hours of work.
“Changes to tax credits that the Tory-led Government have planned to introduce in April will see half a million more children facing poverty.”
