THREE children were taken to hospital at Warrington this morning after a double-decker bus collided with a low bridge.
Two were released after treatment for minor injuries.
But the third requiried specialist treatment to an ear injury.
Initial reports said there were no injuries arising from the crash at the junction of Cliff Lane and Weaste Lane, Grappenhall. But later it was revealed that the three children had been hurt.
About 11 pupils from Lymm High School were on the top deck of the bus.
The roof of the vehicle was ripped off by the force of the collision.
It is thought the bus – on a regular scheduled service – had taken a wrong turning on the route to the school.
A spokesman for Warrington Borough Transport said: “Our first thoughts are with the families of those involved.”

I doubt it was the bus which took a wrong turn – I think that one can be laid squarely at the door of the driver!
I’ve never understood how it’s possible for a bus company to put on a driver who is unfamiliar with a route and even, it seems, unfamiliar with how tall their vehicle is when they approach clearly signed height restrictions.
Having seen a photo of the bus involved and where it came to rest in regards to the route it was operating, I wouldn't rush to conclusions Pete. Hope everyone involved makes a speedy recovery.
What I find hard to belive is how the driver did not realize what had happened untill he had ripped most of the roof off the vehicle.
Really? Double decker bus hits clearly signed 12′ 6′ bridge hard enough to rip the upper deck off along virtually all of its length, and it’s not the drivers fault????
Obviously the bus travelled the wrong way to end up under the bridge, but the driver didn’t “take the wrong turn” – in fact it was a *lack* of turning right onto Weaste Lane from Cliffe Lane which is evident if you look on Google Street View. There’s an investigation ongoing, so just suggesting we wait until that is concluded.

Pete, I really think you should revoke your comments as you are completely ignorant of the facts. The driver is very experienced and professional, he has done this route countless times. It appears he lost control of the bus through a brake failure or something along those lines. If this was indeed the case and the driver had taken the ‘right turn’ (he actually went straight on) there could well have been a fatality. Engage your brain please before making wild accusations.
“IF” his brakes failed, how fast would he have to have been going to hit the bridge with enough force to rip almost the entire top deck off??? No way. That bus didn’t roll into the bridge, it was DRIVEN into the bridge. Just my opinion – as a qualified engineer who knows that stretch of road well and has experience of road crash damage.
I hope all the kids and the driver are ok. Must have been one heck of a shock for them all. I notice todays news mentions fire crews having to go out to another bus today as it’s brakes had overheated. Makes you wonder just how safe public transport is although admittedly (and thankfully) it’s very rare to hear of such things happening.
Lets be thankfull nobody was seriously injured as a result of this collision,lots of speculation,think it is fair to say we will have to wait for a statement from WBT hopefully soon,to establish what exactly what caused the collision.
